Geklebtes is a German term describing items that are joined or fixed together with adhesive rather than by sewing or stitching. In publishing and printing, the phrase geklebtes Buch or Klebebindung refers to a binding method commonly known in English as perfect binding. This method groups sequential pages into a block and attaches the block to a soft cover using adhesive, producing a flexible, cost-effective spine.

Binding method and process

The typical process starts with collating and trimming the pages, followed by preparing the spine to receive the adhesive. A cover, often made of heavier paper or cardstock, is wrapped around the spine. The adhesive is applied to the spine and the bound pages are pressed into place and cured. The result is a single, glued unit with a soft or flexible cover. This technique is well suited for shorter runs and a wide variety of page counts, from magazines to mass-market paperbacks.

Materials and adhesives

Historically, starch pastes and animal glues were used, but modern geklebtes bindings rely on synthetic hot-melt or reactive adhesives. Polyurethane (PUR) and EVA hot-melt are common options. PUR offers higher durability and moisture resistance, while EVA is typically cheaper and faster to set. The choice of adhesive affects durability, flexibility, and resistance to handling.

Advantages and limitations

Geklebtes bindings are cost-efficient for large print runs and allow thinner spines, enabling compact packaging and distribution. They are ideal for softcover formats but can be more susceptible to spine cracking, creasing, or pages loosening with heavy use or moisture exposure. Repairs often involve re-gluing or rebinding.

Context and considerations

Besides publishing, glued bindings are used in catalogs, manuals, and other printed matter where production cost and speed are priorities. In recycling, glued bindings can complicate de-inking and separation, influencing material choices and end-of-life handling.
