Garrisonwas

Garrisonwas is a small fortified settlement located in the northern foothills of the Lorian Range within the realm of Eldoria. Its name derives from the medieval term “garrison,” reflecting its origins as a defensive outpost established in the late sixteenth century to protect travelers along the northern trade route between the coastal cities of Vary and the inland capital of Torren. Presently, the town has an estimated population of 3,200 residents and functions as a regional administrative center for the surrounding villages.

The settlement rests at an elevation of 1,140 meters above sea level on a gently sloping plateau. Its terrain is characterized by mixed coniferous forests to the west and terraced farmland to the east. A spring-fed river, the Verdant, runs through the town’s lower district, providing irrigation and potable water. Climate conditions are temperate continental, with cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers. During the winter months, snowfall averages 120 centimeters, supporting local winter festival traditions.

Garrisonwas was founded by the mercenary guild the Redhand Wardens on 14 August 1574 following a series of raids by the neighboring Daltir tribes. The guild constructed stone bastions and a keep, which served as the nucleus for the settlement’s infrastructure. Over the subsequent centuries, the town expanded under the patronage of the Eldorian crown, becoming a key node in the kingdom’s northern defense strategy. In the eighteenth century, a significant fire destroyed large portions of the wooden structures, after which reconstruction employed brick and stone techniques that persist to this day.

The local economy is primarily driven by artisanal crafts, woodwork, and the production of saltpeter, extracted from the nearby salt caves. Seasonal trade caravans bring goods such as wool, honey, and ironwork to the town’s market. Garrisonwas also hosts an annual winter fair that attracts merchants and visitors from across Eldoria, further contributing to commerce.

Cultural life in Garrisonwas reflects its military heritage. A well-preserved military museum chronicles the history of the Redhand Wardens and the town’s strategic significance. The community actively maintains the old battlements as a public park, where local festivals feature reenactments of historic sieges. Religious practices predominantly adhere to the Eldorian faith, with the town’s central church dedicated to the Earthwardens. The population is largely ethnically homogenous, predominantly Eldorian, and communal decision making is conducted through a council of elected elders.
