FlatCoated

The flat-coated retriever, often shortened to FlatCoated or FlatCoated Retriever, is a medium-to-large sporting dog developed in the United Kingdom in the 19th century to retrieve game on both land and water. It was bred to be energetic, versatile, and capable in a variety of hunting and retrieval tasks, and it remains a popular companion and working dog in many countries.

The breed is characterized by a well-proportioned, athletic build and a dense, flat coat that lies close to the body. Coat colors are solid black or solid liver (brown). The tail is long and well-feathered, aiding balance during activity. Overall appearance emphasizes a friendly, yet purposeful and elegant dog.

Temperament is a defining feature: FlatCoats are typically outgoing, confident, and good-natured with people and children. They tend to be eager, intelligent, and trainable, but can be lively or strong-willed without consistent training and mental stimulation. They generally socialize well with other dogs when raised with proper exposure.

Regular exercise is essential. They thrive on daily activities such as long walks, runs, hiking, and retrieving games. Grooming requires weekly brushing to manage shedding and coat maintenance, with more intensive care during seasonal shedding.

Health considerations include hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, and other hereditary conditions. Lifespan is commonly around 10 to 12 years. Responsible ownership involves regular veterinary care, balanced training, mental enrichment, and a suitable activity level to match the dog’s energy.
