Fernlichtassistent

Fernlichtassistent, also known as automatic high beam or adaptive high beam, is a driver assistance system commonly found in modern vehicles. Its primary function is to automatically control the vehicle's high beam headlights to improve visibility for the driver while minimizing glare for other road users.

The system typically utilizes a camera, often integrated into the windshield behind the rearview mirror, to detect oncoming traffic and preceding vehicles. It analyzes the ambient light conditions and the presence of other vehicles' lights. When the camera detects that the road ahead is clear and it is dark enough, the Fernlichtassistent will automatically switch on the high beams. Conversely, if it detects an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle ahead with illuminated taillights, it will automatically dim or switch off the high beams to prevent dazzling other drivers.

Advanced versions of this system, sometimes referred to as adaptive high beam or matrix LED headlights, can go a step further. Instead of simply turning the high beams on or off, they can selectively illuminate or mask specific areas of the road. This allows sections of the high beam to remain active in areas where there is no other traffic, while precisely dimming or switching off the light in the direction of other vehicles, creating a "tunnel" of darkness around them. This enhances forward visibility without causing discomfort to others.

The Fernlichtassistent is designed to enhance safety and driving comfort, especially during nighttime driving. It reduces the need for the driver to manually switch between low and high beams, allowing them to focus more on the road and traffic conditions. However, it is important for drivers to understand that it is an assistance system and may not always function perfectly in all situations.
