Falzverarbeitung

Falzverarbeitung refers to the processes involved in folding sheet materials, most commonly paper and cardboard, but also sheet metal and textiles. This technique is used to create specific shapes, reinforce structures, or prepare materials for subsequent joining methods. In the paper and printing industry, it is essential for producing a wide range of printed products, including brochures, flyers, books, and packaging.

The basic principle involves bending the material along a designated line, known as a fold line or crease. This can be achieved through manual folding or, more commonly, using specialized machinery. Different types of folds exist, such as parallel folds (where all fold lines are parallel to each other) and right-angle folds (where fold lines are perpendicular). Common folding patterns include the letter fold, accordion fold, and gate fold, each creating a distinct arrangement of the folded material.

In sheet metal fabrication, falzverarbeitung, often referred to as seaming or hemming, is used to join two pieces of metal or to create decorative or reinforcing edges. Techniques like standing seam, Pittsburgh lock, and angle seams are employed, often without the need for welding or rivets. This method is particularly useful in roofing, HVAC ductwork, and automotive manufacturing.

For textiles, folding can be a preliminary step before sewing or can be part of the final garment construction, such as creating pleats or hems. The precision and type of fold depend heavily on the material's properties and the desired final outcome.
