FOXHOUND

The foxhound is a breed of scent hound used for pursuing foxes. There are two main varieties commonly recognized: the English Foxhound and the American Foxhound. Both were developed to combine a strong sense of smell, endurance, and a steady, baying voice suitable for pack hunting.

Origins trace to England, where early hounds were crossed to improve stamina and scenting ability for fox hunting. The English Foxhound was established in the 16th to 18th centuries as a pack dog bred for long, efficient hunting in English terrain. The American Foxhound was developed in the United States from English stock and other European hounds, selected for endurance on long hunts across varied landscapes.

Appearance: Foxhounds are medium to large, athletic hounds. English Foxhounds typically stand about 21-24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 55-70 pounds; American Foxhounds typically stand 21-25 inches and weigh 60-75 pounds. They have short, dense coats. Coat colors are varied; English is commonly white with black and tan patches, while American foxhounds show brindle, red, white, or a mix.

Temperament and behavior: Foxhounds are generally friendly and sociable, good with families when socialized, but they have a strong prey drive and a loud baying voice. They can be independent and challenging to train, demanding patient, consistent handling and plenty of exercise. They thrive with companionship and regular mental stimulation.

Care and health: Foxhounds require daily exercise and secure fencing to prevent chasing. They are relatively healthy with a typical lifespan of about 11-13 years. Common concerns include orthopedic issues such as hip dysplasia, ear infections due to long ears, and occasional bloating. Regular veterinary care, weight management, and careful introduction to households with children help ensure well-being.
