The best known foxhounds are the English Foxhound and the American Foxhound, with the Irish Foxhound less common. Coat colors vary, but tricolor (black, white, tan) and lemon or red-and-white patterns are common.

Historically, foxhounds trace their origins to European packs developed in the 16th to 18th centuries and were refined for quarrying foxes. The English Foxhound is one of the oldest recognized breeds, and the American Foxhound was developed in the United States from English stock and local strains to suit North American terrain.

Physically, foxhounds are athletic, with deep chests, long legs, and a fine build for enduring long chases. They have outstanding sense of smell, keen voices, and a strong instinct to follow a scent. Height ranges roughly 21-27 inches at the shoulder, and weight varies by type.

In practice, foxhounds require substantial exercise, space, and socialization. They can be strong-willed and may be challenging to train without experienced handling. They thrive in packs and are typically kept with fences secure enough to prevent escape.

Today, foxhounds are kept for hunting in traditional packs in some regions where hunting with hounds is permitted, and as companion animals or show dogs in others. Their purpose and management can be governed by regional laws and animal welfare standards.
