Dshackle

Dshackle is a term commonly used to refer to a D-shaped shackle, a metal connecting device used in rigging, lifting, towing, and securing loads. Shackles of this shape are designed to link chains, ropes, slings, and other hardware in a simple, removable manner. The name reflects the characteristic curved “D” profile of the body, which concentrates load paths at the shackle’s shoulders.

Design and variants include fixed-pin and screw-pin types. Fixed-pin shackles use a removable pin that threads into the body or simply passes through aligned holes, while screw-pin shackles allow the pin to be tightened or loosened by hand. In addition to the classic Dee (D-shaped) shackle, larger or more flexible variants may be categorized as bow shackles, which maintain a rounded body to tolerate multi-directional loads better. Materials vary from carbon steel to stainless steel, with protective coatings such as galvanization or plating to improve corrosion resistance.

Sizes and ratings are specified by nominal size and by a working load limit (WLL) or proof load, with higher-strength variants available for heavier lifting. Shackles are manufactured to meet regional standards that govern dimensions, tolerances, and load ratings, and users must select a shackle appropriate to the intended load and environment.

Applications span construction, maritime and offshore work, industrial lifting, and stage or event rigging. Safety considerations emphasize avoiding side loading, regular inspection for deformation or cracks, proper pin engagement, and replacement of damaged shackles. Proper maintenance includes cleaning and, where applicable, lubrication of screw pins to prevent seizing.
