Downshifted refers to a phenomenon in automotive engineering where a vehicle’s transmission shifts into a lower gear under certain driving conditions, typically to improve performance or efficiency. This can occur automatically in modern vehicles equipped with advanced transmission control systems or manually by the driver. The term is most commonly associated with downshifting in automatic transmissions, where the system detects a need for increased torque or traction, such as during acceleration, hill climbing, or aggressive driving.

In racing and performance driving, downshifting is a deliberate technique used to maintain high engine RPM (revolutions per minute) while reducing speed, often to prepare for a quick acceleration or to manage engine braking. This is particularly common in manual transmissions, where the driver manually selects a lower gear to optimize power delivery. Automatic transmissions may also downshift under similar conditions, though the process is controlled electronically rather than by the driver.
