It encompasses planning, installation, renovation, waterproofing, insulation, and ventilation of roof structures. Typical projects include replacing damaged roofing, installing new coverings, repairing flashing, and maintaining gutters and ridge elements. It applies to residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Common roofing materials include asphalt shingles, clay or concrete tiles, metal sheets, slate, wood shingles, thatch, bituminous membranes, and synthetic coverings. The choice depends on climate, design, and budget. Work typically proceeds by removing the old covering when needed, laying an underlayment, installing the new roof covering, and applying flashing and sealants at joints and edges. Ventilation and insulation are integrated to improve energy efficiency and prevent condensation.
