Computerinput refers to the data and signals that originate outside a computer and are supplied to the system for processing. It encompasses both the raw data a program operates on and control instructions that direct software behavior. The term emphasizes the flow of information from input sources into a computing device, distinct from the outputs produced by the device.

The primary means of input are devices and interfaces. Keyboards, mice, touchscreens, microphones, cameras, scanners, and styluses are common input hardware. Indirect or ambient input can include sensors, biometric readers, bar code scanners, or RFID devices. Input methods also include gesture recognition, voice control, handwriting recognition, and brain-computer interfaces, where user intent is translated into data for the computer. Software and drivers interpret raw signals into higher-level concepts such as characters, commands, or data records.

Data are encoded for transmission and processing, typically as binary bits. Character encoding schemes such as ASCII and Unicode map input characters to numeric values. Input also undergoes validation and sanitization to ensure it is well-formed and safe for processing. Systems may perform debouncing for mechanical switches or timestamping for synchronization. Input devices may generate interrupts or be polled by the operating system.

Using accessible design, computerinput supports diverse users: screen readers convert text to speech, alternative input devices enable keyboardless operation, and switching systems allow control via switches or eye-tracking.

In history, input methods have evolved from punched cards and typewriters to graphical user interfaces and voice- or gesture-based controls. Modern computing relies on a layered stack of hardware, device drivers, and software interfaces to capture and deliver input efficiently and securely.
