Chanderi

Chanderi is a historic town in Madhya Pradesh, India, situated in the Ashoknagar district. It is renowned for its handloom textile industry, particularly Chanderi sarees, which are woven on traditional looms and celebrated for their lightweight feel, translucence, and contrasting zari work.

The craft draws on a long weaving tradition that dates back to the medieval period and grew under various regional powers, including the Paramara dynasty and the Malwa sultanate, later attracting Mughal patronage. The town has long served as a trading hub, with weaving and textiles forming a central part of its local economy.

The fabric is produced in three main variants: pure silk, cotton, and silk-cotton blends. Chanderi sarees are characterized by a subtle sheen, crisp texture, and fine motifs—often geometric patterns, florals, or nature-inspired designs—achieved through brocade and zari work. The weaving is typically carried out on handlooms by skilled artisans, and the finished fabrics are valued for their elegance and durability.

Chanderi also features historical landmarks, such as the hilltop Chanderi Fort and a collection of ancient Jain and Hindu temples, reflecting its historical role as a trading and cultural hub. Today, the town remains a key center of textile production in central India and a popular destination for traditional handicrafts, drawing visitors and buyers from across the region.
