Ceratophryids

Ceratophryids are a family of frogs that belong to the order Anura. They are also known as horned frogs or ceratophryine frogs. This family of frogs is found in southern South America, specifically in Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil.

Ceratophryids are medium to large-sized frogs, typically reaching lengths of 6-10 cm. They have a typically green or brown coloration, with some species displaying distinctive stripes or patterns. These frogs have a stout body and a flat, rounded head. Their eyes are relatively small, and they have long legs and long hind legs.

The family Ceratophryidae is composed of 22 species, divided among 9 genera. Notable genera include Ceratophrys, which are often referred to as true horned frogs, and Chthonerpeton. Ceratophryids are generally terrestrial or semi-aquatic, and they can be found in habitats ranging from open fields and grasslands to more humid environments near streams and rivers.

Ceratophryids are carnivorous frogs, feeding on a variety of invertebrates, such as insects and worms. They are oviparous, with females laying eggs in a nest that they have excavated in soil or other substances. Some species of ceratophryids will exhibit parental care behavior, guarding the eggs and protecting the developing young.

These frogs have a relatively wide range of adaptations, allowing them to thrive in different environments. However, their habitats and populations are threatened by various factors, including deforestation, habitat destruction and fragmentation, and the introduction of non-native predators.
