Cedarframe

Cedarframe is a term used in carpentry and construction to refer to a framing system or component constructed from cedar wood. In practice, it describes structural members—such as studs, joists, and beams—crafted from cedar lumber and used in residential or light commercial framing, as well as framing elements in outdoor structures and furniture. The term may also apply to architectural frames or enclosures built primarily from cedar.

Cedar wood properties and benefits: Cedar is a resinous softwood that offers natural decay resistance and insect repellence, making it attractive for exterior framing and outdoor structures. It is relatively lightweight, easy to cut and nail, and has good dimensional stability. Western red cedar and eastern red cedar are among the most commonly used species, with western red cedar favored for outdoor exposure due to its weather resistance. Cedar accepts finishes well, but its natural oils can affect stain penetration.

Limitations and considerations: Cedar is generally more expensive than common framing lumber such as pine. Its strength is adequate for many residential applications but is not a substitute for engineered framing in heavily loaded structures without proper design. Drying and acclimation are important to minimize warping and shrinkage. Outdoors, ongoing maintenance such as sealing or staining helps preserve appearance.

Applications: Exterior and interior framing where its appearance or rot resistance is desirable, including decks, pergolas, sheds, and some timber-frame construction. Cedar frame construction is often paired with other materials such as steel, concrete, or brick.

Sustainability: Sourcing from responsibly managed forests and certification programs (e.g., FSC) supports sustainable use of cedar resources.
