Caterer

A caterer is an individual or company that prepares, delivers, and often serves food for events and other occasions. Caterers arrange meals for private parties, weddings, corporate functions, conferences, and community events. They may operate on site at the venue or deliver prepared dishes for off-site service. Services typically include menu design, procurement of ingredients, food preparation, transport, setup, service, and cleanup. Many caterers also provide staffing, tableware, linens, and equipment such as chafing dishes and portable bars, and some offer full event coordination or bar service.

Catering can be offered as different service styles. In buffet service, guests serve themselves from a station; plated service provides seated, individually plated meals; family-style service brings platters to tables; live cooking stations involve chefs preparing items before guests. Some caterers specialize in specific cuisines, dietary needs, or types of events, and may operate as mobile or pop-up services.

Pricing and contracts vary. Common models include per-person pricing, tiered packages, or fixed-price menus with additional charges for staffing, equipment rental, travel, and setup. Contracts typically specify deposits, minimum guest counts, service times, and cancellation terms. Compliance and safety are important; caterers must follow local health regulations, obtain necessary permits or licenses (including alcohol service where applicable), and maintain insurance and food-safety plans such as HACCP or equivalent standards.
