Borogatás

Borogatás is a traditional method of applying external therapy to the body by placing a cloth or compress on the skin. It can involve warm (meleg borogatás) or cold (hideg borogatás) applications, or a damp cloth used directly. The goal is to influence local circulation, reduce pain, swelling, or inflammation, and promote comfort or healing. In some contexts, borogatás also refers to methods using herbal infusions or saline solutions inside the covering cloth.

Preparation and procedure usually involve cleaning the skin, selecting the appropriate temperature, and preparing a clean, breathable cloth. A hot compress is typically created by soaking a cloth in hot water, wringing it out, applying it to the affected area for about 15–20 minutes, and covering with a dry layer to retain heat. A cold compress uses cold water or a cooled pack for about 10–15 minutes. For safety, check the skin regularly, remove the compress if there is persistent burning, numbness, or color change, and avoid applying to broken skin, severe wounds, or areas with reduced sensation. Individuals with diabetes, neuropathy, vascular problems, or impaired circulation should use heat or cold cautiously.

Indications commonly include muscle strains, sprains, contusions, joint pain, headaches, and fever management in traditional practice. It is generally considered a supportive or symptomatic measure rather than a substitute for medical treatment in serious injuries, infections, or persistent symptoms. Variations such as alternating hot and cold borogatás (váltott borogatás) are used in attempt to modulate inflammation and circulation, always with caution and awareness of individual tolerance.
