Blindspot

A blindspot is a region or aspect that cannot be observed directly. The term is used in both medical and metaphorical senses: anatomically, in human vision, because part of the retina lacks photoreceptors; and, more generally, as a gap in awareness or information.

In human vision, the blind spot corresponds to the optic disc, where the optic nerve exits the retina. This point has no rods or cones, so lights falling there cannot be seen. Because the two eyes provide overlapping fields of view and the brain fills in missing information, most people remain unaware of their blind spot in everyday vision. Visual field tests, such as perimetry, map sensitivity across the field, while the Amsler grid can reveal distortions in central vision.

In psychology and social contexts, blind spots refer to unrecognized biases or gaps in self-awareness. People may undervalue evidence that contradicts their beliefs, overlook ethical implications, or miss important cultural or systemic factors. Awareness can be improved through feedback, structured reflection, training in critical thinking, and exposure to diverse perspectives.

In practical settings, blind spots affect activities such as driving; drivers must compensate for blind spots by adjusting mirrors and using head-turn checks. In organizations and technology, blind spots describe parts of data, processes, or models that are not observed or considered, leading to bias or risk. Methods to reduce them include diverse data, model auditing, scenario testing, and ongoing monitoring.

The term has broad usage across fields, including medicine, psychology, transportation, business, and data science, reflecting a common concern with unrecognized gaps between perception and reality.
