Biegów

Biegów is a term of Slavic origin that generally translates to "gears" or "speeds" in English, commonly referring to the gear ratios in a mechanical system, most notably in transmissions. In the context of automobiles, biegów refers to the number of forward gears a vehicle's transmission possesses. For example, a car with "pięć biegów" has a five-speed manual transmission. This allows the driver to select different ratios to optimize engine performance for various driving conditions, such as acceleration, cruising, or climbing hills.

The concept of biegów is fundamental to the operation of manual transmissions. Each gear ratio provides a different mechanical advantage, affecting the speed of the wheels relative to the engine's rotational speed. Lower gears (first, second) offer more torque for starting from a standstill and for accelerating, while higher gears (fourth, fifth, sixth, etc.) allow the engine to run at lower RPMs for better fuel efficiency at higher speeds.
