Bedmotor

Bedmotor is a motor or actuator integrated into a bed frame to adjust its position. It powers the movement of one or more sections of the bed, typically the head and/or foot, enabling users to raise, lower, or incline the sleeping surface for comfort, medical care, or accessibility. Bedmotors are found in adjustable beds used at home, in hospitals, and in other care settings.

There are several common configurations. Linear actuators driven by DC or AC motors are prevalent in consumer adjustable beds, offering smooth, controlled extension and retraction. In some hospital beds, hydraulic systems provide robust lift for frequent position changes. Rotary motors linked to a scissor mechanism or linkage assemblies are another approach, sometimes combined with gearing to achieve precise positioning and load handling.

Control and safety components typically include a motor, a gear reducer or hydraulic pump, limit switches or sensors, and a control interface such as a remote or built-in panel. Modern bedmotors often feature electronic control units, overload protection, stall detection, and emergency stop functions. Safety considerations include pinch-point guards and compliance with medical device standards when used in clinical environments.

Maintenance involves periodic inspection of moving parts, cables, and connectors; cleaning and lubrication of joints as recommended by the manufacturer; verification of position accuracy and limit switches; and ensuring the power supply and control software remain compatible with the bed’s features. Standards frequently cited for medical-grade bed motors include IEC 60601-1 and related regional certifications.
