Bandväv

Bandväv refers to the technique of weaving narrow fabrics or bands, typically used as trims, belts, lashing cords or decorative elements on garments. The term covers both the process of creating continuous narrow textiles and the resulting bands, which can range from a few millimetres up to several centimetres in width. Bandväv has a long tradition in Europe and Scandinavia, where it served practical purposes as well as decorative ones, and it can be produced on various loom types or with tablet weaving.

Technically, bandväv encompasses several approaches. A common method is weaving on a narrow loom to produce a continuous strip with a predictable width. Patterns can be created by alternating warp and weft colors, by using supplementary warp threads, or by employing techniques from tablet weaving (card weaving), where turning cards or tablets alters the path of the warp to form motifs. Tablet weaving is especially associated with intricate geometric patterns and is well suited for producing decorative bands with a high level of detail. Finishing steps may include edging, hemming, or attaching the band to fabric, and sometimes adding fringes or tassels.

Materials used in bandväv are diverse but traditionally include natural fibers such as wool, linen and cotton, with silk appearing in more luxurious or ceremonial bands. Dyes were often plant-based, producing earthy reds, blues, yellows and greens. Patterns commonly found in historical bands are geometric—diamonds, zigzags, chevrons—and may convey regional or clan associations.

Bandväv remains a topic of study in textile museums and craft education. It is valued for its history, versatility, and the portability of its techniques for producing decorative narrow fabrics.
