Backspashes

Backsplashes are surfaces installed on the wall behind a countertop, sink, stove, or other wet area to protect walls from moisture, heat, and cooking splashes. They also serve as a decorative element, tying together the look of a kitchen or bathroom.

Common materials include ceramic or porcelain tile, glass, natural stone such as marble or granite, stainless steel, quartz, solid-surface materials, brick, cement, laminate, and acrylic. The choice of material influences durability, cleaning requirements, and style. Modern backsplashes range from classic subway tile to seamless glass panels to large-format stone or metal sheets, allowing for a wide variety of textures and colors.

Installation typically involves placing a waterproof or water-resistant backing, setting the chosen material with adhesive, and finishing with grout or seam seals. Many installations run from the countertop edge to the bottom of upper cabinets; some designs extend higher, up to the ceiling, especially behind ranges or cook zones. Proper moisture control and, when applicable, sealed grout or joints help prevent mold and water damage in damp areas.

Design considerations include height, coverage, color, pattern, and how the material interacts with cabinetry, countertops, and lighting. Lighter colors can brighten a space, while reflective surfaces such as glass or polished metal can add visual depth. The backsplash should be chosen to balance aesthetics with maintenance demands and regional cooking needs.

Terminology varies by region; in American English, the term is backsplash (plural backsplashes), while some regions use splashback. The concept remains the same: a protective, decorative wall surface behind a wet area.
