A backsplash is a vertical surface installed between a countertop and the next surface above it, most commonly the wall behind a kitchen or bathroom sink. Its primary function is to protect walls from splashes, spills, heat, and staining, while also providing a decorative element that complements the room’s style.

Backsplashes are made from a wide range of materials. Common options include ceramic, porcelain, or glass tile; natural stone such as marble or granite; metal like stainless steel; tempered glass panels; and solid-surface or acrylic sheets. The choice depends on durability, moisture resistance, ease of cleaning, and design goals. In some spaces, a continuous material such as a solid panel or tile extends behind the entire sink area and up to a splash line that aligns with cabinets or shelves.

Design and installation considerations vary. The typical height in kitchens is about 4 to 6 inches above the countertop, though it can extend higher or to full wall height for a more dramatic look. In bathrooms, backsplashes commonly surround sinks and showers. Installation involves preparing a smooth, moisture-resistant substrate, applying an appropriate adhesive, and sealing grout lines if tile is used. Edges are finished with trim or listellos to prevent moisture penetration.

Maintenance depends on the material. Tile backsplashes require periodic grout sealing and cleaning with mild, non-abrasive cleaners. Stone and other porous materials may need sealing and special care. Regular cleaning helps prevent staining and keeps the backsplash looking its best as a functional and aesthetic component of the space.
