Autopilotteihin, commonly known as autopilots, are systems designed to control aircraft, ships, or other vehicles without continuous human intervention. The primary function of an autopilot is to maintain a set course, altitude, or speed, thereby reducing the workload for the human operator. These systems typically employ a combination of sensors, computers, and actuators to achieve their objectives. Sensors gather data about the vehicle's current state, such as its position, orientation, and velocity. This information is then processed by a flight computer, which compares it to the desired parameters. Based on this comparison, the computer sends commands to actuators, which in turn adjust the vehicle's control surfaces, engines, or steering mechanisms to correct any deviations.

Modern autopilots can perform a wide range of tasks, from simple heading hold to complex navigation along pre-programmed routes. They are crucial for improving fuel efficiency, enhancing navigation accuracy, and ensuring safety, especially during long-duration operations or in challenging environmental conditions. While autopilots significantly reduce the burden on human operators, they are generally not intended to replace them entirely.
