AutoTune

Auto-Tune is a proprietary audio processor developed by Antares Audio Technologies that provides automatic pitch correction and, when pushed, the characteristic Auto-Tune effect. It is widely used in vocal production and is sometimes applied to instruments to align pitch to a selected musical scale.

The software analyzes incoming audio to estimate pitch, then shifts or retunes it toward the nearest note in the chosen key or scale. Real-time mode enables low-latency correction for live performance and tracking, while offline processing allows more precise editing. Core controls include retune speed (how quickly the pitch is corrected), scale and key selection, and options such as formant correction, vibrato preservation, and the optional “humanize” to introduce natural variation. Some versions include key detection via Auto-Key and MIDI or manual pitch automation.

Auto-Tune is a standard tool in many genres, especially pop, R&B, and hip hop. In addition to Antares’ Auto-Tune, other software offers pitch correction and related effects. Auto-Tune has also become a deliberately noticeable effect when used with a fast retune setting, producing the robotic or “T-Pain” sound.

History and impact: Auto-Tune was introduced in 1997 by Antares. It gained mainstream attention after Cher’s Believe (1998) and later became a defining stylistic element in modern popular music. The technique continues to be used both for subtle studio correction and for prominent vocal effects across various genres.
