Nearest refers to the object or point that is closest to a given reference point according to a specified distance metric. In geometry and spatial analysis, the nearest neighbor of a point x is the point y in a set S that minimizes the distance d(x, y). While Euclidean distance is common for physical space, other metrics such as Manhattan, Chebyshev, or Minkowski distances are used depending on the context and data representation.

The nearest point problem is a fundamental computational task: given a finite set S and a query point q, compute argmin_{s in S} d(q, s). Exact solutions can be found by brute force in O(n) time per query, but large datasets require indexing or approximation. Data structures such as kd-trees, ball trees, and Voronoi diagrams organize space to reduce search areas. In high dimensions the problem becomes challenging due to the curse of dimensionality.

Nearest neighbor techniques are widely used in machine learning and pattern recognition. k-nearest neighbors (kNN) classifiers or regressors assign labels or values based on the k closest training examples. For efficiency, approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) methods, including locality-sensitive hashing and product quantization, trade exactness for speed on large datasets.

Applications span geographic information systems, robotics and navigation, computer vision, information retrieval, and recommendation systems, where the nearest item influences routing, object detection, or relevance scoring.
