Augustine of Hippo, commonly known simply as Augustine, was a theologian and philosopher whose writings shaped Western Christianity and philosophy. Born in 354 in Tagaste, in the Roman province of Numidia (present-day Algeria), he studied rhetoric in Carthage and taught in Milan before converting to Christianity. He led a life that included study of Manichaeism and later adoption of orthodox Christian belief, influenced by his mother Monica and the bishop Ambrose, who baptized him in 387.
