Attacher

An attacher is a person or device that joins two or more objects by creating an attachment. The term is formed from attach plus -er, indicating an agent that performs the action of attaching. In everyday English, attacher is relatively uncommon; more often the specific tool or method is named directly, such as stapler or rivet gun.

In mechanical and construction contexts, attachments are made with fasteners, adhesives, or clamps. An attacher can be a tool or device that applies these fasteners, or a component such as a bracket, hinge, or connector that links parts. Examples include a staple gun that attaches paper or fabric, a rivet gun that joins metal, and tape dispensers that apply adhesive tape. The choice of attachment method depends on materials, required strength, and durability.

In computing and information technology, the concept of attaching can be extended to software and hardware connections. A program or debugger may “attach” to a running process to observe or modify its state, and hardware peripherals are attached to systems via interfaces that create an attachment between devices and hosts.
