Arboriculture is the practice of cultivating, managing, and studying individual trees, shrubs, and other woody perennials in the landscape. It focuses on the health, safety, longevity, and aesthetic value of trees rather than timber production, distinguishing it from forestry and silviculture. Arboriculture is applied in private yards, public parks, historic estates, and urban streetscapes, with emphasis on risk assessment, site planning, and long-term maintenance.

Key activities include planting and transplanting, pruning and formative shaping, fertilization and soil management, pest and disease diagnosis and treatment, and the management of trees through their life cycle. Pruning techniques aim to maintain structural integrity, remove dead or dangerous limbs, and guide growth; specialized methods such as crown thinning, crown reduction, cabling, and bracing address risk and durability. Tree preservation during construction is a major concern in urban settings.

Soil care, mulching, irrigation, and aeration support root health and drought tolerance. Risk assessment and hazard mitigation involve monitoring trees for structural weakness, decay, and feedback from environmental stressors. Arboriculture professionals often coordinate with landscape architects, city planners, and property owners to balance safety, function, and aesthetics.

Education and credentialing are common in the field. The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) offers certification programs such as the ISA Certified Arborist and the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ). Standards such as ANSI A300 guide tree care operations. The discipline has historical roots in ancient arboriculture and expanded with modern urbanization and professional associations.
