Antevertedanteflexed

Antevertedanteflexed is a descriptive term in pelvic anatomy referring to the orientation of the uterus in which the fundus tilts forward (anteversion) toward the bladder and the uterine body is flexed forward (anteflexion) onto the cervix. Together, these positions describe the most common uterine alignment in nonpregnant women, often referred to as an anteverted and anteflexed uterus.

Anatomical context and observation: In this configuration, the fundus faces the anterior abdominal wall and the cervix points posteriorly. The position is maintained by pelvic support ligaments, including the round ligaments and uterosacral ligaments. It can be identified during a pelvic examination or imaged with modalities such as transvaginal ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging.

Clinical significance: Antevertedanteflexed uterus is typically a normal anatomical variant and is usually asymptomatic. It is important in differentiating normal variation from positions associated with symptoms or complications, such as retroverted or retroflexed uterus. In most individuals, this orientation does not cause pain, infertility, or other problems and requires no treatment. When symptoms occur, they are more often related to underlying conditions (for example endometriosis, fibroids, or adhesions) rather than the uterine position itself. Awareness of this orientation is particularly relevant for planning certain gynecologic procedures or the placement of intrauterine devices.

Pregnancy context: The uterus commonly remains anteverted and anteflexed in early pregnancy, though its position can change with gestational growth and pelvic changes. No specific intervention is required solely due to this orientation unless associated with other clinical issues.
