The goal is to optimize material flow, reduce handling, minimize production time, and improve safety and flexibility. Layout decisions affect capacity utilization, energy use, ergonomics, and the ability to respond to changes in demand or technology.

Common types of layouts include process layouts (functional), where similar machines are grouped by function; product layouts (line layouts), which place workstations along a production line to support continuous or batch manufacturing; cellular layouts, which organize workstations into small teams that handle a complete part or product family; and fixed-position layouts, where the product remains in place and resources are brought to it, typical for large or unique items. Hybrid and dynamic layouts combine elements to suit specific workflows or product mixes.
