Amalgaamitäytteet, often referred to as silver fillings, are a type of dental restoration used to fill cavities in teeth. They are made from a mixture of metals, typically including silver, tin, copper, and mercury. The mercury, which constitutes about 50% of the material, binds the other metals together to form a durable and long-lasting filling.

Amalgam has been used in dentistry for over 150 years due to its cost-effectiveness, ease of use, and longevity. It is known for its strength and ability to withstand chewing forces, making it a suitable option for molars and other teeth that bear significant pressure. The placement of amalgam fillings is generally a straightforward procedure for dentists.

However, amalgam fillings have also been a subject of debate. Concerns have been raised regarding the mercury content and its potential impact on health. While numerous scientific studies and major health organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, have concluded that amalgam is safe and effective for most people, some individuals choose to avoid it due to these concerns. Allergic reactions to amalgam are rare but can occur.

In recent years, the use of amalgam fillings has declined in many countries, with composite resin fillings, which are tooth-colored, becoming a more popular alternative. This shift is partly due to aesthetic preferences and partly due to the ongoing discussions about mercury. Despite the decrease in usage, amalgam fillings remain a viable and often recommended restorative option in certain clinical situations.
