Överexponerade is a Swedish term that translates to "overexposed" in English. In photography, it refers to a situation where an image has received too much light during the exposure process. This results in a loss of detail in the brightest areas of the image, often appearing as pure white or washed-out regions. The histogram of an overexposed image will typically show significant data piled up at the far right end, indicating clipped highlights.

The causes of overexposure can be a combination of factors. Incorrect camera settings, such as a too-wide aperture, a shutter speed that is too slow, or an excessively high ISO sensitivity, can all contribute. Inconsistent or excessive ambient lighting conditions, especially when shooting in bright sunlight without proper compensation, can also lead to overexposure. Sometimes, the dynamic range of the scene may exceed the capabilities of the camera's sensor, making it challenging to capture detail in both the highlights and shadows without some degree of over or underexposure.

Modern digital cameras often provide tools to help photographers avoid overexposure. The "zebras" feature, for example, displays a pattern over areas that are close to being overexposed. The histogram display is another crucial tool for assessing exposure levels in real-time. In post-processing, while some detail can sometimes be recovered from mildly overexposed areas using software, severely overexposed regions where all highlight information has been lost (blown out highlights) cannot be restored. This makes accurate exposure during capture critical for achieving the best possible image quality.
