Yleistämiskyvyt, known in English as generalization abilities, refers to the capacity to apply knowledge, skills, or experiences learned in one context to new, similar situations. This is a fundamental cognitive process that allows individuals to learn efficiently and adapt to novel environments. Without effective generalization, every new situation would require learning from scratch, making learning and problem-solving extremely difficult.

Generalization can occur across different levels. For instance, a child who learns to recognize a dog might generalize this knowledge to identify other dogs, even if they look different. This is often referred to as stimulus generalization. Conversely, response generalization occurs when a learned behavior is applied to a different but related stimulus or situation. For example, someone who learns to use a specific type of software might be able to figure out a similar program more easily due to transferable skills.

In machine learning and artificial intelligence, generalization is a critical performance metric. A model that has good generalization abilities can make accurate predictions on unseen data, indicating that it has learned the underlying patterns rather than simply memorizing the training data. Poor generalization, often termed overfitting, means the model performs well on the data it was trained on but fails to perform adequately on new data.

The development of generalization abilities is influenced by factors such as the richness and diversity of learning experiences, the ability to identify commonalities and differences between situations, and the development of abstract concepts and rules. Cognitive strategies aimed at promoting generalization involve active learning, metacognitive awareness, and seeking out varied practice opportunities.
