A volier, or aviary, is a large enclosure designed to keep birds while allowing flight and natural behaviors. Volieres vary from simple garden cages to expansive walk‑in structures integrated with buildings.

Construction and features: An aviary is typically built with a sturdy frame and weatherproof wire mesh, often galvanized or stainless steel. Roofs or top netting protect from weather and predators, while sides provide ventilation. Inside, perches, branches, hiding places, water sources, and feeding stations are arranged to encourage natural activity. Proper drainage, shading, and sun exposure are important. Locks and secure latches help prevent escapes, and regular inspections are needed to address rust, loose fittings, or damaged netting.

Types: Outdoor freestanding aviaries, wall‑mounted or attached enclosures, and walk‑in designs are common. Some volieres are species‑specific, tailored for parrots, canaries, or waterfowl, while others are mixed‑species. Enclosures may be temporary for housing during demonstrations or breeding seasons, or permanent features in a facility.

Welfare and maintenance: Sufficient space for flying, physical exercise, and social interaction is essential. Enrichment such as foraging opportunities, varied perches, and vertical space supports well‑being. Routine cleaning, sanitation, netting maintenance, pest control, and safe, clean water and diet are critical for bird health.
