utslitage
Utslitage is the progressive deterioration of a component, object, or system caused by use, aging and exposure to operating conditions. In engineering and maintenance contexts it describes wear that reduces functional capability and reliability, and is often considered when estimating remaining life or the time to failure. Utslitage can be mechanical, chemical or a combination of both.
Common mechanisms include abrasive and adhesive wear between contacting surfaces, surface fatigue from cyclic loading, corrosion
Wear may occur gradually with small material loss over time or abruptly after a defect forms. Assessment
Prevention and management focus on extending component life and reducing risk. Strategies include selecting durable materials,
Examples of utslitage are common in gears and bearings of mechanical drives, tires, conveyor belts, piping systems,
