Utfodring refers to the act of providing food to animals in order to meet nutritional needs. The term is used across farming, horticulture, wildlife management and pet care, and covers domestic livestock, companion animals, farmed fish, as well as wild birds and other wildlife in urban or rural settings.

Purposes of utfodring include maintaining nutrition during periods of scarcity, supporting growth and lactation, preparing animals for breeding, rehabilitating injured or orphaned wildlife, and helping manage populations or protect crops in certain landscapes.

Methods and materials vary by species. Feeding systems range from manual hand feeding to troughs, racks and automatic feeders. Diets include hay, silage and grains for ruminants; concentrates and pellets for pigs and poultry; commercially prepared foods for pets; seeds, suet and small-mammal foods for birds; and formulated pellets for aquaculture. Feeding frequency can be ad libitum or scheduled, with rations adjusted for age, production stage and season.

Considerations include achieving a balance of energy, protein, minerals and vitamins; preventing spoilage and mold; maintaining hygiene of feeders and water sources; and reducing disease transmission, obesity and digestive issues. It is important to avoid encouraging dependency in wildlife and to consider environmental impact and waste management. Some regions have guidelines or regulations governing feeding practices and animal welfare.

Impact and management involve regular monitoring of health, body condition and behavior, adjusting feeds as needed, and ensuring proper storage and handling of feed. Feeding sites should be maintained to minimize waste and ecological disturbance, while providing appropriate shelter and clean water.
