Urotherapists are clinicians who provide urotherapy, a non-surgical approach to urinary disorders. They assess and treat patients with symptoms such as urinary incontinence, urgency, frequency, nocturia, urinary retention, and enuresis. Urotherapy can be used in adults and children and is delivered in hospitals, specialized continence clinics, urology practices, and community settings.

Urotherapy emphasizes education, behavioral modification, and targeted exercises. Common strategies include bladder training with paced voiding, scheduled voiding, fluid management, constipation treatment, and avoidance of bladder irritants. Pelvic floor muscle training, often with biofeedback, is used for pelvic floor dysfunction. In children, urotherapy may address toilet training, enuresis, and behavioral factors.

Practitioners may include physiotherapists with pelvic floor expertise, continence nurses, urologists, and other licensed clinicians who have received specialization in urotherapy. Training typically covers assessment of urinary symptoms, urodynamics interpretation, exercise prescription, bladder monitoring with diaries, and patient education on lifestyle modification.

Evidence and scope: Urotherapy can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for various conditions, particularly stress and urge urinary incontinence in adults, overactive bladder, and primary nocturnal enuresis in children. It is generally recommended as a first-line, non-invasive treatment and may be combined with pharmacotherapy or other procedures when appropriate.
