In control theory and engineering, a system is described as controllable if its state can be guided from any initial configuration to any desired final configuration using admissible inputs. When a system's state cannot be fully steered, those aspects are described as uncontrollable within that model. Practically, engineers address uncontrollables with robust control methods, state estimation, and design redundancy, as well as strategies to maintain acceptable performance despite them.

In economics, operations, and risk management, uncontrollables include weather, natural disasters, geopolitical events, regulatory changes, and shifts in consumer preferences. Limitations: the label uncontrollable does not always imply absolute impossibility of influence; with longer time horizons or different tools, some factors may become more controllable or better managed.
