Työpaketti (Finnish for “work package”) is a defined unit of work used in project management to organize, plan, and monitor activities. A työpaketti represents a portion of the project scope that can be completed within a manageable period and assigned to a team or contractor. The term is commonly used in Finnish practice as the equivalent of the English concept “work package.”

A työpaketti typically includes objective, deliverables, and acceptance criteria, as well as boundaries that define what is in and out of scope. It also specifies the required resources, estimated effort and cost, duration, and any dependencies on other work packages. An owner or accountable person or team is assigned, along with identifiers, start and end dates, and status information. Documentation may also note risks, assumptions, and acceptance procedures.

Relation to planning and control: Work packages are the building blocks of a work breakdown structure (WBS). They should be small enough to estimate reliably and to manage, yet large enough to produce meaningful results. They support planning, budgeting, scheduling, risk assessment, progress tracking, and change control. In many organizations, work packages are the units used for performance measurement and for communicating progress to stakeholders.

Procurement and contracts: In external work or supplier arrangements, a työpaketti can define the scope of work (SOW) within a contract, clarifying deliverables, criteria, and responsibilities.

Lifecycle: Creation during project planning, followed by execution, monitoring, and closure once criteria are met and deliverables are accepted.

Example: A software project might include a työpaketti such as “Develop user authentication module,” with deliverables like login and password reset, acceptance criteria, owner, and a defined schedule and budget.
