Trükk is the Estonian term for printing, referring to the process of reproducing text and images on paper and other substrates, as well as the industry and products that result from it. The concept encompasses a range of technologies used to transfer ink or other image-forming agents to a surface, including the design, production, and finishing steps involved in creating printed matter.

The history of printing spans centuries, beginning with early techniques such as woodblock printing and progressing to movable-type printing, which enabled mass production of texts and images. In Europe, the invention of the printing press around the 15th century is a turning point, and printing subsequently diversified into multiple methods. In Estonia and elsewhere, printing played a key role in literacy, administration, and culture, expanding with industrialization and, later, digital technologies.

Today, the main printing methods are letterpress, offset lithography, digital printing, screen printing, and gravure. Letterpress uses raised relief surfaces; lithography relies on the repulsion of oil and water; digital printing creates images directly from electronic files without plates; screen printing pushes ink through a stencil onto the substrate; gravure engraves images onto cylinders for high-volume production. Each method has particular strengths regarding speed, cost, and substrate compatibility. Prepress work covers design, layout, typesetting, and color management, followed by plate or cylinder preparation, the printing pass, and post-press finishing such as cutting, folding, binding, or lamination.

In modern practice, trükk is integrated with digital workflows, automation, and sustainability initiatives, including optimized ink usage and recycling of substrates. Printed materials remain essential for books, newspapers, packaging, labels, signage, and art, even as digital media expand.
