Transpassing is the social phenomenon in which a transgender person is perceived by others as the gender with which they identify, rather than the sex assigned at birth. The term is commonly used to describe the degree to which a person’s gender presentation—clothing, voice, mannerisms, and name—aligns with others’ expectations of that gender. Being perceived as the target gender can influence experiences of safety, discrimination, and access to social spaces.

The concept is widely discussed in gender studies, sociology, and LGBTQ+ advocacy. It is distinct from deliberate deception; rather, passing describes social perception and is often contingent on context, audience, and presentation. Passing can affect interactions in work, housing, healthcare, and public life, where misgendering or refusal to acknowledge a person’s gender can cause harm.

Determinants of passing include gender-affirming presentation, voice and speech patterns, body language, name and pronoun usage, and legal documents such as name changes or gender markers. Achieving or maintaining a degree of passing may reduce misgendering and personal risk but can also create pressure to conform to gender stereotypes or conceal aspects of identity, contributing to stress or invisibility for some individuals.

Criticism and nuance surround the concept. Some critics argue that “passing” reinforces cisnormativity and can pathologize non-conforming identities, leading to policing of appearance or behavior. Others note that not all transgender people prioritize passing, and many identify as nonbinary or gender-nonconforming. In practice, the use and significance of passing vary across cultures, contexts, and individual goals.
