Tokoferoler are small, nocturnal mammals that are native to the sandy coastal dunes of the southern region of Galleria. They belong to the order Peramelia and the family Tokoferolidae, a lineage that diverged from other marsupial groups during the late Oligocene. The name “tokoferoler” derives from the Galleria‑dialect words “toko” (sand) and “feroler” (dweller), reflecting their adaptation to dune ecosystems.

Morphologically, tokoferoler are similar in size to a small shrew, with a head‑body length ranging from 12 to 16 centimetres and a tail that adds an additional 6 to 8 centimetres. Their most distinctive feature is a dense, sandy‑colour pelage that provides camouflage against predators. The species exhibit a highly arboreal lifestyle; they weave complex burrows in dunes and build nests in dune grass or low shrubbery. Tokoferoler have a metallic­‑brown iris, and their ears are large relative to head size, enabling acute hearing in the acoustic environment of open dunes.

The diet of tokoferoler primarily consists of dune arthropods, especially beetles and grasshoppers, supplemented by seeds and occasional small reptiles. They are solitary except during a brief breeding season that occurs each spring. Females give birth to a single offspring after a gestation period of roughly 23 days. Juveniles develop fur in a single stage and learn independent foraging skills rather quickly.

Because their habitat has been subject to reclamation for tourism and development, populations of tokoferoler have shown signs of fragmentation. Conservation efforts are in place to protect dune habitats, and monitoring programs have reported stable population numbers in protected reserves. Tokoferoler remain a subject of ongoing ecological research, particularly in relation to dune ecosystem dynamics and the impact of climate change on coastal habitats.
