Dune is a science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, first published in 1965 by Chilton Books. It is the first novel in the Dune series, later expanded into a large franchise that includes sequels, prequels, and many adaptations. Dune is frequently cited as one of the greatest works of science fiction, and it won the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1966.

Set in a distant future, Dune takes place on Arrakis, a harsh desert planet that is the galaxy's only source of the spice melange, a substance that prolongs life, awakens mental powers, and enables space navigation. He adopts Fremen customs, helps transform Arrakis's ecology, and leads a campaign to control the spice, challenging imperial power and religious factions in the process.

Dune has been praised for its complex world-building, ecological themes, and political intrigue. It has influenced science fiction media, inspiring many writers and directors, and spawning numerous sequels, adaptations, and a prominent film and television legacy. Notable adaptations include a 1984 film by David Lynch, a 2000 miniseries adaptation, and a 2021 feature film by Denis Villeneuve, with a planned continuation.
