Toimintatavan is Finnish for the operating method or way of operating. It refers to the standard pattern of actions, routines, roles, and decision-making practices through which tasks are carried out in a given organization or context. It can be described explicitly in written guidelines or emerge as a shared practice among people.

The concept is used across fields such as organizational governance, project management, education, healthcare, and public services. A toimintatavan describes who does what, in what order, with which resources, and according to which rules or norms. It focuses on practice and culture as much as on formal procedures, and it can include workflows, communication norms, and problem-solving approaches.

In relation to other terms, menetelmä usually points to a specific technique, while malli or suunnittelumalli refers to a model or design. Toimintatapa emphasizes how activities are carried out in practice and the organizational culture surrounding them, whereas prosessi describes the sequence of steps involved.

Development and implementation typically involve stakeholder input, documentation, and training. A toimintatavan should be reviewable, with feedback mechanisms and metrics to monitor adherence and outcomes. Changes should consider both internal dynamics and external requirements.
