A throughlist is a record-keeping construct used to track items as they progress through a sequence of stages in a process or workflow. Each entry in the throughlist notes a single item’s movement from one stage to the next, including the time of transition, the responsible agent, and the outcome of the stage. Throughlists are focused on movement and routing rather than task completion alone.

Common domains include manufacturing, logistics, software development pipelines, data processing, and service delivery. In each domain, the throughlist serves as a traceable path of an item or payload as it travels through pipeline stages, queues, or handoffs.

Data model and structure: Typical fields include item_id, stage_name, timestamp, operator or system, status, and notes. Some implementations also record prior_stage and next_stage, duration, and quality metrics. Throughlists can be realized as relational tables, log streams, or document stores and are often designed for efficient querying, auditing, and historical analysis.

Applications and benefits: They enable end-to-end traceability, accountability, and compliance; support bottleneck identification, throughput analysis, and cycle-time calculations; and improve fault isolation by revealing where in the process an item encountered delays or errors.

Relation to other concepts: A throughlist differs from checklists in that it records movement across stages rather than completion of tasks; it commonly complements queues and routing tables in workflow systems; and it can be integrated with event-driven architectures to automatically emit stage-transition events.
