A tethermaker is a person or firm that designs, manufactures, or repairs tethers—cords or lines used to restrain, secure, or anchor objects. Tethers range from horse leads and dog leashes to industrial safety lines and marine mooring ropes. Historically, the term referred to craftspeople who handmade rope from natural fibers; today it may describe a supplier or specialist in tethering products.

Materials and methods. Tethers are made from natural fibers such as hemp, manila, and cotton, and synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and Kevlar. Production methods include twisting, braiding, or plaiting, using ropewalks, braiding machines, or extrusion lines. Material and construction choices determine strength, elasticity, abrasion resistance, and UV stability.

Applications. Agricultural tethering includes livestock lines and stall tethers; domestic uses include dog leads and garden ties; industrial and construction contexts use fall-arrest lanyards, tool tethers, and temporary anchors; maritime uses include mooring lines and rigging; climbing and rescue employ specialized tether systems with safety standards.

Safety and standards. Tether products are often tested to tensile-strength and durability standards. Standards vary by country and application. Reputable tethermakers document specifications, inspection regimes, and retirement criteria for worn equipment.
