Testkabler, or test cables, are flexible insulated conductors used to connect electrical measuring instruments to circuits under test. They provide a simple, reusable means to probe circuits without altering them. Typical construction features a copper conductor surrounded by insulating material such as PVC, silicone, or rubber, with connectors on each end. Connectors vary from banana plugs (4 mm, often shrouded) to alligator clips, hook clips, pin probes, or RF connectors, depending on the instrument and application. Cable lengths commonly range from about 0.5 to 2 meters, and insulation is color-coded to indicate function or polarity.

Common types and configurations include banana-to-banana leads, banana-to-alligator or banana-to-hook leads, and probe or pin variants for IC testing. For high-frequency or RF work, coaxial test cables with connectors like BNC, SMA, or N connectors are used, where impedance (such as 50 ohms or 75 ohms) is important. Lead sets are often designed with mixed termini to suit bench multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, or signal generators.

Applications cover electronics laboratories, automotive diagnostics, education, and field service. They are used for voltage, current, and resistance measurements, continuity tests, signal probing, and making temporary connections between instruments and circuits.

Safety and selection considerations include selecting leads rated for the working voltage and current, ensuring good insulation and intact insulation, and avoiding damaged or frayed cables. Color coding, connector compatibility, length, and, for RF use, impedance matching, are important factors. Proper storage and inspection help maintain reliability and safety.
