These conditions can arise from overuse, acute injury, or underlying medical issues. Common tenopathies include tendinitis, which is inflammation of a tendon, and tendinosis, which involves degenerative changes in the tendon tissue without significant inflammation, often due to chronic overuse. Tears, both partial and complete, can also occur.

Symptoms of tenopathy vary but commonly include pain, tenderness, stiffness, and a reduced range of motion in the affected joint. The pain may worsen with activity and improve with rest. Swelling and a creaking or grating sensation (crepitus) can also be present. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, patient history, and sometimes imaging studies such as ultrasound or MRI to assess the extent of tendon damage.

Treatment strategies for tenopathy depend on the specific condition and severity. Initial management often involves RICE therapy (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), pain medication, and activity modification. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in rehabilitation, employing exercises to strengthen surrounding muscles, improve flexibility, and promote tendon healing. In more severe cases or for chronic conditions, corticosteroid injections, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, or surgical intervention may be considered. Prevention focuses on proper warm-up and cool-down routines, gradual increases in training intensity, and maintaining good biomechanics.
