PTFE band, also known as Teflon band, refers to a belt or strip made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). PTFE bands are valued for a combination of non-stick surface, chemical resistance, and ability to perform at elevated temperatures. They can be produced as unreinforced belts or as reinforced varieties with fabric, fiberglass, or metal mesh to improve mechanical strength. PTFE bands are used as conveyor belts, gaskets, seals, and insulating strips across various industries.

PTFE is processed into belts and tapes through methods such as paste extrusion and calendaring. Teflon tapes and films may be supplied alone or laminated to backings for rigidity and handling. Reinforced PTFE belts are commonly used in demanding environments where long life, low friction, and cleanability are essential. The material maintains a very low coefficient of friction and exhibits chemical inertness to most solvents and acids, while offering good electrical insulation and high temperature tolerance.

Key properties include high temperature resistance (continuous service commonly up to about 250–300°C depending on grade), excellent chemical resistance, non-stick behavior, low friction, low moisture absorption, and self-lubricating characteristics. PTFE belts are non-reactive with food products and many pharmaceutical formulations, making them suitable for food processing and cleanroom environments. They also provide good dimensional stability and can operate over a wide humidity range.

Common applications span food processing and packaging, pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical processing, electrical insulation, and dry bearing or wear components. Standards for PTFE tapes and belts are set by various organizations (such as ASTM and ISO) to address thickness, width, temperature rating, and performance requirements. Handling, storage, and disposal should consider PTFE’s inert nature and the potential release of fumes if heated to extreme temperatures.
