Teemantkate is a thin film coating applied to a surface to impart the properties of diamond onto a substrate. It can consist of a true synthetic diamond coating or a diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer, and it is typically deposited by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods. The primary purpose of a teemantkate is to achieve extreme hardness, high wear resistance, low friction, and chemical inertness, thereby extending tool life and reducing maintenance in demanding environments.

Variants commonly include pure diamond coatings and diamond-like carbon, which encompasses nanocrystalline and microcrystalline forms. These variants differ in mechanical properties, adhesion behavior, and suitability for specific substrates. The coatings are usually deposited on hard, machinable bases such as cemented carbide, high-speed steel, or certain ceramics, after substrate surface activation and cleaning. Coating thicknesses range from a few hundred nanometers to several micrometers, with adhesion influenced by pretreatment and, in some cases, intermediate adhesion layers.

Applications are primarily industrial. Teemantkate is used on cutting tools (drills, milling inserts, saw blades), wear parts and molds, and in some automotive and medical components where reduced wear and improved longevity are valuable. In addition to functional uses, DLC-based coatings are sometimes employed for tribological improvement on medical devices and consumer components.

Challenges and limitations include higher production costs, the need for careful substrate preparation, and potential adhesion issues or coating delamination under thermal cycling or impact. Handling and cleaning should avoid aggressive abrasive processes to preserve coating integrity.
